We went back to the villa, Jade quiet on the way. I could tell something was on her mind, and I’d caught the wink directed my way from Bec over her wedding comment. I liked Bec; I thought she was fun but a little…a little different than Jade.

I liked my California girl.

We had a couple of hours until my beach surprise. I’d been working with our butler Andre on the plans for the last couple of days. I’d even run things by Thomas while we played the tennis game. He’d texted Mal to get her input, which I almost had a fit over, until Mal said she’d run to the store and pick something up. She’d seen the perfect dress…she’d dropped it off for me just as the game ended, and I’d run it back to the villa before swinging back to pick Jade up.

I wanted this to be perfect.

If it was all I could ever give her, I wanted her to realize how I felt about her.

That this…this was beyond anything I’d ever expected when I’d invited her to spend the week together. That she was beyond anything I’d ever expected, ever could have hoped for.

She let us into the villa and went to the fridge to grab a soda. The day was warm still, and I could feel the humidity kicking up a little. She opened the drink and took a second one out, holding it out to me.

“Thanks. Where do you want me to put this?”

“Just by the closet. I have to take it back in the morning anyway.”

I did as she said and came back, taking a sip of my cold soda. She was standing by the doors, looking out at the water.

I wrapped my arm around her waist, pulling her close. “You didn’t forget I have a surprise for tonight, did you?”

She laughed softly. “No, but are you—”

“I’ve had it planned since we were in the air on the way here.”

She arched an eyebrow and pulled back a little, a look of amusement on her face. “You’ve had it planned for that long?”

“I was bored.” I shrugged. “The pretty girl next to me slept the whole flight in.”

She laughed. “She was pretty, huh?”

“Gorgeous. Adorable. All wrapped in one. Only one drawback…”

She gasped. “What was it?”

She took a sip of her soda. I waited ’til she was done.

“Wouldn’t share her gummy bears.”

She bust out laughing, and I could see whatever she’d been thinking about had finally broken away.

My Jade was back.

I leaned forward and pressed my lips to hers. “Why don’t you relax, take a bath, and then get ready?”

“For?”

“My surprise. We’ve got…” I went to check my watch then realized I wasn’t wearing it.

She giggled.

“We’ve got a while anyway.”

“Okay.”

She stood up on tiptoe and gave me another kiss, her fingers playing with my hair as she pressed her lips firmly against mine. I groaned softly as she pulled back.

“You could join me…” She tugged lightly on my shirt, drawing me back closer.

I wanted to.

Definitely, desperately wanted to…

But I had to sneak out for one last check.
